Kino Mausoleum

Magdalena is named after a phenomenal Italian Jesuit missionary, Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, who established a number of mission churches in what is now northern Mexico and southern Arizona, and had a missions route that stretched 1000 miles through the region.
Father Kino, who lived from 1645 to 1711, was a multi-talented individual, with interests in cartography, astronomy, ranching, and exploration. He introduced many new agricultural and animal husbandry practices to the people of Northern Sonora, and the impact of his contributions continues to this day.
The remains of this venerated Jesuit missionary were discovered near the city plaza in the 1970’s, and are on display in this mausoleum, located on one side of Plaza Monumental.
